Afghanistan has ordered the suspension of Watsab and Telegraph to solve technical problems, officials said Saturday.
Facebook, Watsab and Tilgram are popular messaging applications between a smartphone using Afghans - including the Taliban and the Islamic Jihad organization.
"The state-owned Salam network is the only one to provide Internet services to supervise the system, which is in place from November 1 to November 20," Communications Ministry spokesman Najib Nangalay told AFP.
"We are testing new technology and the Wattasab and Telegraph will be temporarily blocked," said Nangalaye.
"It is not a blow to the freedom of communication in Afghanistan - we have access to Facebook and Twitter and we are committed to freedom of expression."
Acting Communications Minister Shahzad Areeobi said the move came in response to dissatisfaction with services rejected by oil industry workers.
"In order to improve the services and solve the technical problems of these programs, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is considering the introduction of new technology," he said on a Facebook site.
The test is "time-consuming" and requests a pause for attaching and a telegram.
The move has sparked a storm on social media with users describing the move to prevent messaging services as infringing on their right to freedom of expression.
"The blocking of Al-Watsab and Telegraph is the beginning of censorship by the Afghan government and making the virtual world under their control in Afghanistan, and I think that is intolerable," Abdullah said.
Another user, Mehdi Yaser, said Watsab's quality was "significant" and urged the government to focus on shutting down "Pakistani suicide bomber factories" instead.
"The two applications that we used most were banned, and God is the curse of this government," said Abdul Raouf Sharifi.
A communications official ridiculed the government's claim to develop new technology.
"They will not match the international standard application," he said.
"Watsab is very popular because it uses less data and very good quality.
"It could be security (but) if it prevents people from accessing VPNs," he said, referring to VPNs.
About eight million people, mostly in the main cities of Afghanistan, have access to the Internet, with almost nothing during the repressive Taliban regime of 1996-2001. Most of that is through cell phones.
The Taliban are often used to disseminate data in Afghanistan, while pro-Taliban supporters support Tilgram.
